Every night there is a city of workers afloat on our oceans, delivering goods far and wide along a liquid highway; BighART’s Blue Angel project aimed to tell the stories of these seafarers, many of whom are subjected to workplace exploitation - and in doing so, to promote the practice of Fair Shipping world wide.

Artist Residency onboard the oil tanker British Loyalty

A contributor to BighART’s Blue Angel project in 2014, with a seven day residency to paint and sketch crew members, Evert travelled from Botany Bay, Sydney to Port Brisbane. What resulted was a deeper understanding of being at sea is really like, getting a glimpse of the solitude, the tight camaraderie and the uncertain future many of today’s seafarers hold. The works produced were first exhibited in 2015 at Tasmania’s Ten Days on the Island Festival as part of a site-specific theatre production in Hobart’s Astor Hotel. A subsequent exhibition happened on the tall ship the “James Craig” at the Wooden Boat Festival 2016, Sydney.
